Charlottetown is a deep water commercial harbour. The port remains ice-free from April 15 through December 31 and in this regard occasional icebreaker support is required late in the shipping season to complete Island exports of the year's root crops to overseas markets. Charlottetown is the Capital and largest city in the Province and therefore is the centre of most commerce.
Transport Canada has transferred the ownership of the Port of Charlottetown to the Charlottetown Harbour Authority Inc. (CHAI). This announcement was made April 22, 2005, today by Shawn Murphy, Member of Parliament for Charlottetown, on behalf of Transport Minister Jean-C. Lapierre, together with Charlottetown Harbour Authority Inc. Chairman, Stan MacPherson.
